The St. Peter’s Church Organ
St. Peter’s Church is complemented by an organ which is also of great importance. It is no longer in superb condition, and its swell-box was removed something like 30 years ago in a misguided attempt to allow more sound into the building: but it is an otherwise untouched example of the work of Thomas C Lewis and was built in 1870.
It retains the small circular nameplate and the enormous drawstops which were a feature of his work at that time. Tonally, it speaks for itself and, whatever the shortcomings of its present condition, it can be regarded as a remarkable survival of this remarkable builder and can sound almost like a cathedral-size instrument rather than a very modest two-manual.
